What is SLURRP?
School Leadership in Urban Runoff Reduction program is a South Baltimore Gateway Partnership funded program that educates students about storm water runoff and the affects that they have on their “schoolshed.” Many students in the South Baltimore community have been disconnected from water resources and have little education about how land-use in their community affects the Chesapeake Bay and local streams and rivers.
The goal of this program is to provide students hands-on projects that allow them to make connections to their environment and become cognizant of the issues facing their communities and discover ways in which they can address these issues in their schools. This program combines Living Classrooms Foundation led in-classroom outreaches, with teacher-led lessons, action projects, and an immersive full day field trip to Masonville Cove providing students with a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE). In year 1 of SLURRP students learn about their watershed and investigate ways to reduce runoff pollution. In year 2, students expand on their lessons from the previous year taking action steps to address issues of runoff on their own schoolyard.
